Functional and more convenient than using the web site. The images that correspond to the weather are all squished, which is most noticeable when showing the picture of the kid enjoying the rain.

This app accompanies a long-overdue refresh of the Metservice web site, and packs a lot of useful weather information into a quite tidy and functional application, including detailed forecasts, including hourly predictions for local areas. The app has quickly become my go-to application for forecast data for NZ. Overall, I cant yet award 5 stars because there are a couple of things which bug me… the favourites list appears to be uneditable (at least in the current release), the app frequently forgets the city Im most interested in (Christchurch) and defaults to data for Wellington, and the app offers no onscreen assistance to show how to use it… some types of data are too-well hidden. So overall, solid, worth the modest price, but Ill also still be using alongside "Weather NZ" -- which is invaluable for its extra features including tide forecasts and snow and surf reports.
Not a bad start, but still leaves much to be desired. The app is buggy and crashes each and every time I try to view the hourly data. As it stands, the mobile version of the Metservice web site is far better, and presents information much clearer. You can create your own app to take you to the site by visiting www.metservice.co.nz on your mobile phone, click OK, when asked if youd like to view a mobile version of the website, then select your Town. When your town or location appears, use the Share button at the bottom of the Safari app and select Add to Home Screen. Viola, you have your own app. It has a better layout and design too than the real app that you must purchase. Not worth the money in my estimation until they fix the bugs and the overly busy design of the app.
I downloaded this for a NZ visit. It is painfully slow and cumbersome due in part to the limited and slow mobile internet service in NZ. Images and radars take ages to load. Its much easier and faster to get the weather info elsewhere. 2 stars.
There are way too many ads for this app to be of any use. Can’t see the limited weather information through all the clutter. And there is no reason why the app needs location permission all the time. “When using the app” should suffice.
This is a decent app with a few features not in the Apple weather app, such as tides and laundry. But the advertising is soooo annoying. It gets in the way of what I really want to see. If there were a $4 in-app purchase to get an ad-free version, I’d take it.
Why do you need location permissions all the time for location based services; surely “while using the app” is sufficient. It’s creepy that Met Service checks my location 20x per day even when I’m not using the app. Otherwise the app is not bad. I don’t especially like the layout, but the information is very helpful and appreciated.
I enjoy the interface and the maps. But one gripe is the lack of sound in the MetService videos
The app is terrible and Metservuce forecasts are unreliable. They can’t even predict wind strength, resorting to updating forecast in real-time. If you want a decent forecast of weather use the App “Windy”. Normally 90 % accurate a week out. MetService you need to get better or stop taking taxpayer money. !
Extremely limited weather app compared to what’s available in the US. It would be nice to have more customizable controls on what is seen and more access to data like wind maps, tides, lightning. The radar map is extremely low detail and doesn’t even provide a location. It would be great to provide minute-casts with weather like Auckland in the winter. Also the video plays through the ringer volume which is just bad programming.
Originally you'd pay for ads free, now switched to ads everywhere. No longer worth buying.
I paid for the app, now it has ads. Complete bait and switch. Will be deleting this as it is now worthless to me.
Why so slow to load? Using mobile website is faster. Defeats the whole point.
Takes an age to load, location services do not work and continually tells you that you are "offline" even when connected. Do not bother!
Slow, sometimes doesn't load at all, and UI requires too many taps for simple tasks.
New app is slow to load. Seems to have less info - or maybe just uses more real estate to display it. Bring back the old one please.
This app is very slow loading and this is using an iPad Pro.
After giving it a few weeks to see if I could learn the new version, I can say now it is awful. It is now nearly impossible to use for quick reference for weather. I loved the old version allowed you to quickly swipe to see the days, as well as included images from local areas. This version has gotten a graphic design upgrade that is LOW on readability and requires way too much scrolling to find anything. I'm sure metservice paid a pretty penny for this redesign and they should demand a fix. I also paid for this app and am now seeing ads... no, not how paid apps work. So disappointed.
Useless eye candy makes getting details impossible for knowing what to bring or whether to drive or bike. If you get the display to show rain and wind, you can't easily swipe back and forth between differ parts of the region. Combined with interface freezes and feature loss (where'd the full national radar picture go?!), I'm really sad I "upgraded".
Why should I have to suffer the ads when you charge for the app?
Please remove all the ads off this paid app.
The design is smart and it conveys all the info I need without too many clicks.
